C’est la ville où se trouve notamment le Campus Universitaire a moins de 5 km de Fort de France, c’est une agglomération sportive jeune et animée.
C’est une commune classée « Station Voile Nautisme et Tourisme ».
Avec un mouillage de qualité sur la Côte Caraïbe, le quartier Case-Navire à été érigé en commune en mars 1888 et pris le nom de Schoelcher en hommage au grand abolitionniste français qui signa le décret d’abolition au nom du Gouvernement de la IIème République, le 27 avril 1848.
Schoelcher est aussi un site caraïbe connu qui a fait l’objet de fouilles très instructives sur la vie des amérindiens.
A l’époque de la colonie, Case-Navire vivait de la pêche et des grandes habitations sucrières comme celle de Fonds Rousseau dont le site historique est protégé et inscrit à l’Inventaire des Monuments Historiques.
Elle compte aussi de nombreux équipements touristiques, hôtels, restaurants, le Casino Plaza Batelière ou le Palais des Congrès Madiana dommage toutefois que les équipements de Madiana plage ont totalement disparus de nos jours.

With a high wetting quality on the Caribbean Coast, the Case-Navire area was built into a town in March 1888 and took the name of Schoelcher in honor of the great French abolitionist who signed the decree of abolition on behalf of the Government of the Second Republic , April 27, 1848.
Schoelcher is also a well known Caribbean site where enlightening excavation works about the life of American Indians was carried on.
At the time of the colony, Case-Navire lived from fishing and large sugar plantations like Fonds Rousseau whose historic site is protected and included in the Inventory of Historic Monuments.
It also has many tourist facilities, hotels, restaurants, the Casino Plaza Batelière and The Palais des Congrès Madiana. Its a pity however, that the equipments on Madiana beach have totally disappeared nowadays.
