Vieux Fort doit son nom au fort français qui dominait la pointe côtière de l’île. Les habitants s’appellent les Vieux-Fortains
Les indiens caraïbes qui étaient sur place depuis des lustres, furent chassés, les français construisirent alors le fort royal. Ce dernier changea de nom et devint le Vieux-Fort. Il fut dénommé un temps « Vieux fort l’Olive » en raison du nom du chef de la colonie.

English: Vieux Fort is named after the French fort overlooking the coastal tip of the island. The inhabitants are called “Vieux-Fortains”.
The Caribbean Indians, who were there for ages, were driven out, and the French then built Fort Royal. The latter changed its name to Old Fort. There was a time when it was called « Old Fort Olive » because the Head of the colony.
