Comme son nom l’indique, petit canal est l’un des plus petit des canaux creusés au 18éme siècle par la population, l’actuelle « Bakadè » passant par le bourg et permettant le passage des barges vers Morne-à-l’Eau en longeant le grand cul de sac marin.
Le nom initial de la commune était d’abord le mancenillier, du nom d’un arbre aux fruits odorants mais toxiques qui dit-on, aurait empoisonné les marins de Christophe Colomb, dans les premiers temps de la colonisation.
Les habitants sont appelés les Canaliens ou « Moun Kannal ».

English: As its name indicates, Petit Canal (small canal) is one of the smallest canals that was dug by the local population during the 18th century, the actual “Bakadé” flowing within the town and allowing the ferries crossing towards Morne-à-l’Eau while following the marine “Grand cul de sac”.
The initial name of the district was the ‘Mancenillier”, the name given to a sweet-smelling tree but with toxic fruits which is said to have poisoned many of Christopher Columbus sailors at the very beginning of the colonization of the island.
Its inhabitants are called the “Canaliens” or “Moun Kannal”.
