Commune à vocation agricole, Saint-André a connu la plus forte concentration de travailleurs immigrés indiens autour de ses champs et usines. Grâce aux nouvelles voies de communication, la commune attire une nouvelle population. Ses attraits touristiques, à l’écart des grandes voies de circulation, méritent le détour. Entre la rivière du Mât et la grande rivière Saint-Jean, Saint-André est une commune bien peuplée. les nouvelles voies rapides mettent le centre-ville à 15 minutes de Saint DENIS. Le climat chaud et humide justifie une végétation luxuriante et le fait que tout ou presque pousse là-bas. On y trouve de vastes étendues sucrières, mais également la culture de la vanille.
