La commune tient son nom d’une sorte de petite ruisseau d’eau douce, le Macouba, appelé plus simplement têtard et qui régalait à l’époque le Père Labat, curé de la paroisse en 1696. Ce bouillant Père Dominicain est connu pour ses célèbres écrits et pour ses travaux sur le rhum. Le bourg de Macouba est bâti au sommet d’une falaise. Le dépeuplement de Macouba s’est accru ces dernières années, pourtant le manque d’habitants de ce petit bourg inquiétait déjà un observateur de 1743 qui n’enregistrait qu’une cinquantaine de foyers.
La Paroisse de Potiche, son nom d’alors, donné par un important propriétaire du quartier voisin, Grand-Rivière, connut l’âge d’or de la culture du tabac avant de devenir le domaine de grandes habitations sucrières aux 18ème et 19ème siècles.
Pour la détente, l’espace « Le Verger ». Autrefois aire de repos pour les voyageurs qui venaient de loin, est devenu un véritable lieu de convivialité avec son bassin d’eau de rivière.
Anglais : The town takes its name from a small freshwater stream, the Macouba, simply called tadpole, and which used at the time to delight Father Labat,the priest of the Parish in 1696. This fiery Dominican Father is known for his famous writings and for his works on rum. The village of Macouba is built on the top of a cliff. The depopulation of Macouba has increased in recent years, yet the lack of inhabitants in this small village was already a matter of concern by an observer in 1743 who recorded about fifty homes only.
The Parish of Potiche, its name at that time, given by a major owner of the nearby neighborhood of Grand Rivière, experienced the heyday of tobacco farming before becoming the domain of large sugar plantations in the 18th and 19th centuries.
For relaxation, the open space « Le Verger » is a must. Formerly a resting spot for travelers who came from faraway places, it has now become a place of conviviality with its basin of river water.
