C’est une jolie petite commune de pêcheurs avec ses cases traditionnelles dont la longue plage de sable cendré « des raisiniers » a fortement influencé Paul Gauguin lors de son séjour en Martinique en 1887.Le Carbet, est le lieu où débarqua Christophe Colomb le 15 Juin 1502. Le Carbet a été un lieu d’implantation précolombienne. Le premier se trouverait sur le versant qui s’élève de la rive droite de la rivière du Carbet vers la Croix. Un deuxième gisement existerait sous l’emplacement de l’hôtel Marouba Club. Mais après enquête, ce ne serait qu’un « campement » et on y a retrouvé que des objets de la deuxième période Arawaks. Le nom de la commune évoque la grande case centrale ou carbet des villages caraïbes. A visiter absolument: la distillerie Neisson, le Musée Gauguin, la Galerie d’Histoire et de la Mer, le jardin de Papillons et également le Jardin de l’Habitation de l’Anse Latouche, réalisé par J.Ph. Thoze auteur du fabuleux Jardin de Balata.

Anglais : This is a pretty little fishing town with its traditional huts whose long sandy grey beach of  » raisiniers » strongly influenced Paul Gauguin during his stay in Martinique in1887.Le Carbet, is the place where Christopher Columbus landed on 15 June 1502. Carbet was a pre-Columbian location. The first would be on the slope that rises from the right bank of the river Carbet towards the Cross. A second site was said to exist beneath the location of the hotel Marouba Club. But after investigation, it was only a « camping site » and objects of the second Arawaks period were found on the spot. The name of the town evokes the great central bungalow or “carbet” which is a typical Caribbean hut. Places to visit absolutely: the Neisson rum distillery, the Gauguin Museum, the Gallery of History and Sea, the Butterfly Garden and also the Jardin de l’Habitation at Anse Latouche, created by J.Ph. Thoze who also created the fabulous Jardin de Balata.
